বাংলাBangladesh may experience below-normal rainfall from September to November, while four to six low-pressure systems could form over the Bay of Bengal during the period. At least one of them could potentially develop into a cyclone, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The information was included in the department’s long-range weather forecast for September-November. The forecast was recently issued by Mohammad Mominul Islam, chairman of the department’s expert committee and director in charge.
According to the forecast, daytime and nighttime temperatures may remain above normal over the next three months. Bangladesh could also experience three to five mild to moderate heatwaves. Thunderstorms may occur on six to 10 days during the period.
Rainfall in most parts of the country may remain close to normal in September, although overall rainfall could be slightly below normal. Rainfall is expected to decline further in October and may remain below normal in November, according to the weather forecast.
For September, rainfall is forecast at 250-280mm in Dhaka, 330-360mm in Chattogram, 360-380mm in Sylhet, 310-330mm in Mymensingh, 260-280mm in Rajshahi, 370-390mm in Rangpur, 270-290mm in Khulna and 320-340mm in Barishal.
In October, Dhaka may receive 140-180mm, Mymensingh 160-210mm, Chattogram 200-240mm, Sylhet 160-220mm, Rajshahi 120-140mm, Rangpur 130-180mm, Khulna 120-170mm and Barishal 210-240mm of rainfall.
Low-pressure systems and cyclone in the Bay of Bengal
The department said four to six low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal between September and November. One or two of them could develop into depressions, and the possibility of at least one depression developing into a cyclone cannot be ruled out.
Although overall rainfall may be lower than normal, active monsoon conditions and low-pressure systems could occasionally trigger heavy rainfall. Humid and uncomfortable heat may also persist in parts of the country even after the monsoon season begins to withdraw.
The department’s review showed that Bangladesh received 5.7 percent less rainfall than normal in August. Chattogram and Mymensingh divisions received above-normal rainfall, while other divisions recorded lower rainfall. Four low-pressure systems formed over the Bay of Bengal during August.
The highest rainfall in August was 198mm, recorded in Hatiya, Chattogram, on August 5. The highest temperature was 37.0 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi on August 27, while the lowest was 22.5 degrees Celsius in Narayanganj on August 7. The average temperature remained above normal throughout August, according to the meteorological office.
Meteorologists said the temperature and rainfall trends over the next three months could affect agriculture, river flows and everyday life. People are advised to follow regular updates for information about weather conditions on specific days rather than relying solely on the long-range weather forecast.
