বাংলাThe death toll from a devastating flood in Nepal triggered by an ice and rock slide near the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 1,344. Nearly 5,000 people, including at least 589 foreign nationals, are still missing.
According to the latest information, more than 13,000 people had been rescued alive as of Saturday, officials said.
The devastating Nepal flood on August 26 caused the Bhote Koshi River to overflow, inundating towns and villages across northern and central Nepal. Homes, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower projects were extensively damaged.
According to a report by India Today, at least 21 people were also killed in the Chinese part of the affected region, while more than 500 people were reportedly missing in Tibet, according to Chinese media reports.
The highest number of bodies, 360, was recovered from Chitwan district. Another 230 bodies were recovered in Nawalparasi West and 222 in Nawalparasi East. The remaining bodies were recovered from Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Gorkha, Dhading and Tanahun districts.
After necessary procedures and DNA samples were collected, 1,030 bodies were temporarily buried. Only 96 identified bodies have so far been handed over to their families.
Amid the ongoing response to the Nepal flood, 60-year-old Chandika Shrestha was rescued alive on Saturday from an upper floor of a four-storey building buried under debris in Bidur city of Nuwakot district. She had been trapped for 10 days. After being rescued unconscious, she was airlifted to the Nepal Army’s Maithili Barracks in Trishuli for medical treatment.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, among the 1,344 recovered bodies, 758 were adults, 85 were children and parts of 501 bodies were missing.
Officials said the condition of the bodies was caused by prolonged exposure to water and pressure from debris. Search and identification efforts are continuing following the devastating Nepal flood.
