Many students dream of pursuing a PhD abroad, but tuition fees, accommodation and daily living expenses often make that goal difficult. The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia has announced a funding opportunity that could help eligible students overcome these financial challenges.
According to a report by Indian media outlet NDTV, the university’s research-based scholarship program provides tuition support along with a living stipend for both domestic and international students.
Under the UQ Graduate School Scholarship (UQGSS), students can receive up to A$39,220 per year in tax-free living allowance in 2026. At an estimated exchange rate of A$1 to around Tk 80, this is approximately Tk 3.14 million per year, or an average of about Tk 262,000 per month.
The allowance is intended to help students cover accommodation and everyday living expenses. The amount may be reviewed and adjusted each year.
How long is the funding available?
PhD students can generally receive the support for up to three and a half years, subject to meeting the scholarship’s conditions. Admission to the university alone does not guarantee the funding, as applicants must go through a competitive selection process.
Who can apply?
The scholarship is open to both domestic and international students. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance and research potential. Selection may consider academic results, previous research experience, the quality of the proposed research and whether the university provides a suitable research environment.

Not only for PhD programs
The funding is not limited to Doctor of Philosophy programs. Students enrolled in research-based Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programs and certain professional doctorate programs involving substantial research may also be eligible.
The funding should not be considered a salary. Instead, it is financial support designed to help students manage living expenses while undertaking research.
For students interested in research across science, technology, medicine, social sciences and humanities, a PhD scholarship of this kind could make studying abroad more financially accessible. Eligible applicants should carefully review the scholarship requirements, eligibility criteria and selection process before applying.
