বাংলাBangladeshi migrant worker Tarik Rahman, 31, moved to Malaysia in 2013 with dreams of building a better future. After working as a construction worker for 13 years, his plan to return home and become an entrepreneur was cut short by a fatal workplace accident.
Tarik died on August 19 after falling from the third floor of a multi-story construction site in Malaysia. His body was flown to Bangladesh on Wednesday night. The Saint Martin expatriate body journey then continued by road and boat.
On Thursday, his body was transported by ambulance from Dhaka to Shah Porir Dwip jetty in Teknaf. From there, it was taken by trawler to his village home in Saint Martin. Hundreds of people gathered when the Saint Martin expatriate body arrived at the jetty to pay their final respects.
Relatives said Tarik often spoke about his desire to return to Bangladesh after spending many years in Malaysia. He missed his family, relatives and the natural beauty of his home island. The arrival of the Saint Martin expatriate body brought deep grief to his family and community.
Tarik’s wife and two young daughters also traveled to Bangladesh with his body. His family said they received assistance from the Bangladesh Embassy in Malaysia and different levels of the Bangladeshi administration to bring him home quickly.
His death has also raised questions about workplace safety for Bangladeshi construction workers abroad. A Bangladeshi worker living in Malaysia said safety standards may not always receive adequate attention in some projects involving subcontractors or supervisors. The Saint Martin expatriate body case has therefore highlighted the importance of stronger safety measures for migrant workers.
