An elderly man has been accused of sexually abusing a nine-year-old orphaned child in Natiabari Bazar area of Aminpur in Pabna’s Bera upazila. The accused, identified as 70-year-old Md Soleman Sheikh, is reportedly a paternal cousin-grandfather of the child.
Soleman Sheikh is a resident of Rajnarayanpur village in Bera upazila. The child is the daughter of his nephew. In the Pabna child abuse allegation, police reportedly visited the child’s home after receiving a call from her grandmother.
The child’s grandmother alleged that attempts were being made to suppress the incident through local influential people in exchange for money. She said the child’s father died several years ago and her mother later remarried and moved elsewhere, leaving the child in her grandmother’s care.
Police said the accused fled the area after the incident became known. SI Bulbul of Aminpur Police Station said officers went to the scene after receiving a call from a local media worker, but returned because the family was unwilling to file a complaint at the police station.
Questions have been raised over why further action was not taken after police learned about the allegation. The Pabna child abuse allegation remains under scrutiny as authorities await a formal complaint.
Aminpur Police Station OC Humayun Kabir said no written complaint had been received. He said legal action would be taken if a complaint is filed. The Pabna child abuse allegation will require appropriate investigation and legal action to ensure the child’s protection and access to justice.
Authorities’ next steps in the Pabna child abuse allegation are being closely watched as the investigation and legal process move forward.
