Narayanganj-3 MP Azharul Islam Mannan has called on everyone to play a responsible role in protecting Bangladesh’s fisheries resources and building a prosperous, self-reliant country.
He made the remarks on Sunday (August 16) at a discussion meeting organized by the Sonargaon Upazila administration and the Department of Fisheries to mark National Fisheries Week 2026.
Mannan said fish fingerlings should be released systematically in rivers, canals, water bodies and ponds while ensuring the breeding and conservation of native fish species.
He noted that the fisheries sector plays an important role in Bangladesh’s economy and rural employment. Modern technology and proper training can help farmers in Sonargaon increase production and build a self-reliant Bangladesh through fisheries.
The MP also emphasized that fish farming provides an important source of livelihood for many people while helping meet the nutritional needs of the population.
Three successful fish farmers were awarded crests and certificates at the event. The programme concluded with the release of 40 kilograms of fish fingerlings of different species into a pond on the Upazila premises, supporting the goal of a self-reliant Bangladesh through fisheries.
