A travel agent in Tehran told AFP that some flights to Baghdad, Muscat, Qatar, Georgia and Azerbaijan had been suspended, while services to several other destinations, including China, remained available. The latest US measures also threaten foreign companies that provide services to Iranian airlines. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the new measures on Monday.
The impact became visible as the sanctions took effect. A Tehran travel agent told AFP that ticket sales were being held back because of uncertainty over possible cancellations. Some flights to Istanbul were still scheduled, while others had been cancelled.
FlightRadar24 data showed that a Mahan Air flight from Tehran landed in Guangzhou, China, even after the new measures took effect. China has previously said it opposes the US sanctions and considers them illegal.
Sanctions on Iranian airlines are not new. The country’s aviation sector has been under US restrictions for years. The latest measures, however, increase pressure on foreign airports and service providers that handle Iranian carriers.
Some flights operated by smaller Iranian airlines were also still scheduled. Tehran’s international airport information showed services involving destinations in Turkey, Armenia, Najaf and Dubai.
Bessent said foreign companies providing Iranian aircraft with fuel, airport services or ticketing support could face US measures. The development could further restrict Iran’s international air connectivity.
Several sources have said Iraq is expected to comply with the US measures by suspending Iranian airline services to Baghdad. However, the Iraqi government had not issued a detailed public announcement at the time of reporting.
The full impact of the new sanctions and the extent to which other countries will comply with them remain unclear.
