বাংলাBangladesh women’s cricket team have been knocked out of the Asian Games gold-medal race after a 114-run defeat to India in the semi-final. Amid the disappointment, Nigar Sultana Jyoti has confirmed that she does not want to continue as the T20 captain.
Nigar Sultana Jyoti made it clear that her decision is not linked to any dispute or disappointment with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Instead, she wants to focus more on her batting and contribute to the team as a player.
After Bangladesh’s semi-final defeat to India at Korogi Sports Park in Japan, Jyoti said she had already informed the board that she did not want to remain T20 captain after the Asian Games.
There had been speculation that she was stepping down because she felt she had not received enough support from the board during a difficult period. However, Nigar Sultana Jyoti rejected that suggestion.
Jyoti explained that she is not leaving the captaincy because she is hurt. She wants to give more to her country and team as a batter and player, and believes that focusing on her own game is the right decision.
Bangladesh struggled badly with the bat against India. India posted 195 for four in 20 overs, powered by an unbeaten century from Shafali Verma. Bangladesh were then bowled out for just 81 in 15.4 overs.
Nigar Sultana Jyoti said a batting collapse can happen when chasing a big target, while also acknowledging that Bangladesh could have restricted India to a lower total with better bowling.
She also accepted responsibility for the batters’ failure, saying that if even one top-order batter had stayed at the crease longer, Bangladesh could have added more runs.
According to Nigar Sultana Jyoti, a lack of preparation in Japan was another major problem. Rain meant Bangladesh had only two days of training before the Asian Games.
Bangladesh’s quarter-final against China was abandoned because of rain. A planned practice match against China also did not take place, leaving the team with limited preparation opportunities.
Although Bangladesh’s hopes of winning gold are over, they have one more match at the Asian Games. Bangladesh will face Pakistan in the bronze-medal match on Tuesday, September 22.
Nigar Sultana Jyoti remains positive about the Pakistan match, pointing to Bangladesh’s good record against them. The bronze-medal match is set to be her final game as Bangladesh’s T20 captain.
After stepping away from the leadership role, Jyoti will now look to devote more attention to her batting and her contribution as a player.
