Argentina made a memorable start to a new chapter without Lionel Messi, beating Bolivia 4-0 in a dominant display. The Latin American champions scored twice in each half and controlled the match from the start.
In Thursday morning’s match in Cordoba, Argentina’s goals came from Lautaro Martinez, Nico Paz, Cristian Romero and Jose Manuel Lopez. The hosts played attacking football throughout, while Bolivia struggled to create clear chances against Argentina’s solid defense.
Argentina Without Messi Make Strong Start
Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring in the 19th minute. After initially failing to control a pass from Alexis Mac Allister, Lautaro regained possession, entered the box and fired a low shot close to the post that the Bolivian goalkeeper could not stop.
Argentina doubled their lead in the 29th minute. Nico Paz received a defense-splitting pass from Exequiel Palacios and lifted his first touch over the advancing goalkeeper. It was his second goal for the national team.
Argentina had another chance before halftime when Julian Alvarez tried to cut the ball back for Lautaro. However, Lautaro was surrounded by defenders and could not get a clean shot away. Alvarez later saw his effort from a difficult angle saved by the goalkeeper.
Argentina Continue Their Attack
The attack continued after the break as Argentina without Messi extended their advantage. New captain Cristian Romero made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, heading Nico Paz’s free-kick into the net.
Argentina continued to create chances. Alvarez narrowly missed from a free-kick in the 76th minute, while Leonardo Balerdi was unable to connect with a corner at the far post a minute later.
Jose Manuel Lopez missed a counter-attacking chance in the 83rd minute. His goal two minutes later was ruled out for offside, but he quickly made amends by scoring from inside the box in the following minute to complete Argentina’s victory.
In the third minute of stoppage time, Argentina came close to adding another goal, but Bolivia’s goalkeeper made a diving save to deny Lionel Flores’ header.
Argentina without Messi have opened their new chapter with a 4-0 victory. They will face Burkina Faso on Tuesday before playing Benin on Wednesday. Messi, who is retiring, is set to make his final appearance for Argentina in that match.
