  • A US jury in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties, marking a historic blow to the social media giant.

The court found Meta liable for misleading consumers about the safety of its platforms and failing to protect children from exploitation.

The verdict follows a six-week trial that exposed internal documents showing that company executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, were aware of the risks but prioritized profits over safety.

Zuckerberg’s Deposition: Harm to Children Called “Inevitable”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri gave a recorded deposition to the jury. They admitted that platforms of their scale inevitably cause harms to children. These harms include sexual exploitation and mental health issues.

The prosecution argued that Meta’s reliance on AI for content moderation was ineffective, generating thousands of useless reports for law enforcement while predators continued to operate on the platforms.

Encryption Controversy and Future Legal Battles

The trial also highlighted a heated debate over end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger. Investigators testified that encryption has made it harder for police to track child predators. While Meta has announced its intent to appeal the $375 million fine, the case will move to its next phase on May 4. The court is expected to consider mandatory changes to Meta’s operations, including stricter age verification and faster removal of bad actors.
