বাংলাThe International Day of Peace is observed worldwide on September 21 amid continuing wars and armed conflicts in different regions. The United Nations says the day is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace and promoting non-violence and peaceful coexistence.
Current conflict levels highlight the importance of the occasion. According to ACLED, 204,605 conflict events were recorded worldwide from December 1, 2024, to November 28, 2025, resulting in more than 240,000 deaths. The International Day of Peace draws attention to the need for peace, human security and an end to hostilities.
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 through UN General Assembly Resolution 36/67. At the time, it was linked to the opening of the General Assembly and was observed on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.
On September 7, 2001, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 55/282, establishing September 21 as the permanent date. The resolution also designated the day as a global ceasefire and non-violence observance. The fixed date has been observed since 2002.
The UN’s Japanese Peace Bell is another important symbol associated with the occasion. The bell arrived at UN Headquarters on June 8, 1954, as a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan. It was made using coins and medals donated by representatives from more than 60 countries.
The International Day of Peace is not limited to ending wars. It also highlights human rights, dignity, equality, security and peaceful coexistence. The UN emphasizes that addressing poverty, inequality, discrimination and injustice can also contribute to building lasting peace.
Despite continuing conflicts around the world, the International Day of Peace provides an annual opportunity to promote dialogue, non-violence and peaceful solutions to disputes.
