  • Dementia affects millions of people worldwide, but experts say nearly 45% of cases may be preventable through healthier lifestyle choices.

According to the 2024 Lancet Commission report, 14 modifiable risk factors contribute to dementia. These include limited education, hearing and vision loss, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol use, physical inactivity, depression, head injury, social isolation, and air pollution.

Researchers emphasize that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying physically active, managing chronic diseases, avoiding tobacco, and remaining socially engaged can significantly reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Neuroscientist Laura Bojarskait says the brain remains adaptable throughout life, meaning positive lifestyle changes at any age can help protect long-term brain health.
