The BNP leaders of Moheshpur Upazila have boycotted the official Independence Day ceremony today. The incident occurred during the government program organized by the local administration in Jhenaidah. According to local sources, the controversy started when the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) allegedly omitted the name of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman from her official speech. This omission led to immediate protests from the present BNP activists.
Allegations Against Upazila Administration and UNO
The local BNP leaders claimed that UNO Khadija Akter intentionally avoided mentioning the proclaimer of independence, Ziaur Rahman. They also alleged that the speech ignored the current political context regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Following the omission of Ziaur Rahman’s name, the Upazila and Municipal BNP units left the venue in protest. They described the incident as a “distortion of history” by a government official during a national festival.
BNP Demands Accountability and Official Reaction
The protesters expressed deep resentment, stating that ignoring a key figure of the Liberation War is unacceptable. As of now, the Upazila administration has not issued any formal statement regarding the exclusion of Ziaur Rahman’s name. The boycott caused a temporary disruption in the scheduled programs at the venue. Senior BNP leaders have called for an investigation into the matter to ensure historical accuracy in future state-sponsored events.
