Five people, including an event management cameraman, were injured in a shooting while travelling to a wedding ceremony in Begumganj, Noakhali. The Begumganj shooting took place late Monday night.
The incident occurred around 11:15pm on Monday in the Gazitola area of Moushakpur village under Alaiyapur Union. The injured were identified as Nazrul Islam Shanto, Maruf Ahmed, Jasim Uddin, Sakib Hossain and Bablu.
According to Nazrul Islam Shanto, they were travelling on three motorcycles and two CNG-powered auto-rickshaws to record a gaye holud ceremony. They were allegedly attacked from behind, and gunfire caused them to fall onto the road. The Begumganj shooting left five people injured.
The injured were taken to Noakhali General Hospital. One victim was reportedly in critical condition and was later referred to Dhaka for better treatment.
Shanto claimed that he recognized local men Harun and Pichchi Riad among the alleged attackers. However, attempts to contact the accused for their comments were unsuccessful.
Local sources said the incident may have stemmed from a previous dispute between Harun and Raihan. Police are investigating the circumstances behind the Begumganj shooting and will take legal action based on their findings.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shamsuzzaman said several motorcycle riders were injured by shotgun pellets after being fired upon from behind. The investigation will determine the exact circumstances of the Begumganj shooting.
