Mohammad Sohel Rana, a former University of Dhaka student who ranked first in History under the General Education Cadre in the 49th BCS special examination, has not been included in the final gazette. While 668 candidates were provisionally nominated for appointment in the final results, the published gazette contains the names of 611 candidates.
Sohel Rana is from Kukhapara village in Sonaroy Union of Nilphamari Sadar. He completed his bachelor’s degree in History at the University of Dhaka in 2020 with a CGPA of 3.54 and his master’s degree from the same department in 2021 with a CGPA of 3.56.
Earlier, he obtained a GPA of 5 in the 2014 SSC examination from Sonaray Sanglashi High School and a GPA of 4.92 in the 2016 HSC examination from Carmichael College in Rangpur.
After achieving the top position in his subject, Sohel Rana had credited his parents, teachers and family for his success. He also said that he had long aspired to become a teacher and contribute to positive changes in society.
However, after the final gazette was published on September 30, Sohel Rana expressed his reaction on social media. In a Facebook post, he referred to being left out of the gazette despite ranking first in the 49th BCS Education Cadre in History.
According to the final results published by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, 668 candidates were provisionally nominated against 683 vacant posts in different positions of the BCS General Education Cadre. The PSC said candidates could not be nominated for 15 posts because suitable candidates were not available.
A subsequent notification from the Ministry of Public Administration appointed 611 people to entry-level positions in the BCS General Education Cadre. As a result, 57 of the 668 provisionally nominated candidates were not included in the final gazette.
The specific reason why Sohel Rana’s name was absent from the final gazette has not been established from the publicly available information. Therefore, no particular reason can be confirmed in his individual case.
