  • A doctor accused of negligence following the death of a newborn in Chauddagram, Cumilla, has made a sarcastic remark about journalists after local media reported the family’s allegations. In a Facebook post, Dr. Khairatun Hissan Keya made the doctor’s remark suggesting that people should seek journalists’ advice about childbirth and treatment decisions.

In the post published on Tuesday (October 6), Dr. Keya made the comment in response to reports concerning allegations of negligence surrounding the death of a newborn in Chauddagram.

Recently, relatives of Nazma Akter, a pregnant woman from Khamar Pushkarani village in Chauddagram, alleged negligence against Dr. Keya during childbirth. They claimed that an attempt was made for a normal delivery for an extended period, after which the newborn died. The family also claimed that there were signs of injury to the newborn’s head. Nazma was later taken to a private hospital in Cumilla city in critical condition.

Responding to the allegations, Dr. Keya told journalists that she had attempted a normal delivery and sent the patient to Cumilla promptly after her condition was not satisfactory. When asked about the newborn’s death and the reported head injury, she said she would speak with the patient’s family.

The doctor’s remark has drawn attention following the publication of the reports. However, the allegations of medical negligence remain allegations unless established through an appropriate review or investigation. The accounts of the family and the doctor also need to be considered separately.

Dr. Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury Tofael, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Chauddagram, said that if the affected family submits a written complaint, the authorities will discuss the matter with higher officials and take legal action as appropriate.

The incident has also prompted discussion about the relationship between healthcare professionals and journalists. Determining responsibility for the newborn’s death would require consideration of the relevant medical records, the allegations raised by the family, the doctor’s account and any findings from the authorities.
