A man allegedly killed his father-in-law with an axe in Kaliganj, Gazipur, following a dispute reportedly linked to dowry demands and alleged abuse of his wife. The accused, Mozammel Haque, 35, later surrendered to police. The Kaliganj father-in-law murder occurred on Friday, August 28.
The victim, Majid Morol, was a banana trader. Police said the accused surrendered at Kaliganj Police Station on Saturday morning and admitted responsibility during initial questioning.
Relatives alleged that Mozammel had physically and mentally abused his wife, Shahana, over dowry demands and other disputes. The couple had been married for about 17 years and have three children. Shahana had reportedly been staying at her father’s home after allegedly being forced out of her marital home about 15 days earlier.
Police said Majid was heading to Jamalpur market with bananas at around 5pm on Friday. When he reached the Bhangaripatti area, Mozammel allegedly approached him from behind and attacked him with an axe. Local residents took Majid to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. The Kaliganj father-in-law murder investigation is underway.
After the incident, the accused reportedly posted a video on social media and went into hiding. He later surrendered at the police station around 10am on Saturday. Police said the initial investigation points to a dowry-related dispute as a possible motive. The accused was sent to jail through the court after completion of the legal process in the Kaliganj father-in-law murder case.
