  • Online Class Controversy: Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Nakib, the recently departed Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University, has described the government’s decision to hold online classes three days a week as “rash” and “devoid of reality.” Read more.

Ignoring Ground Realities: Dr. Nakib’s Statistics

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday (April 11, 2026), Dr. Nakib criticized the Ministry of Education’s experimental move to combat energy crises and traffic congestion through remote learning. Addressing the Online Class Controversy, he pointed out that while statistics suggest 72% of households have smartphones, at least 30% to 40% of homes in over 80,000 villages still lack these devices. He argued that implementing such a policy without addressing the digital divide is an injustice to rural students.

The academic also highlighted the lack of professional training among teachers for digital pedagogy. “Taking an online class is not easy; many aspects need to be recalibrated,” he stated. Dr. Nakib questioned how many teachers in Bangladesh possess the necessary skills to manage the Online Class Controversy effectively. He termed the ministry’s decision as “useless and irrational,” warning that playing with the education system in this manner could lead to a significant setback for the nation’s future generations.

    Technological Dependency vs. Structural Gaps

While the ministry justifies the move as a step toward a technology-driven future, the Online Class Controversy reflects deep-seated structural issues in the country. Experts agree that without ensuring high-speed internet and affordable devices for all, a mandatory shift to online learning remains unfeasible. Dr. Nakib’s critique has resonated with many who believe that education policies must be inclusive and based on actual data rather than experimental whims.
