A shocking incident occurred in Keshabpur, Jessore, where a mob attacked the police. The crowd was gathered through a fake announcement from a mosque microphone. Three police officers were injured, and a convicted criminal was briefly snatched away. The incident took place late Wednesday night in Hijoldanga village.
Police had gone to the village to arrest Jahangir Alam, a convict in three cases. After his arrest, a false rumor was spread via a mosque microphone. The announcement claimed that the police had killed the suspect. Immediately, a mob of 50 to 60 people gathered and attacked the officers.
Sub-inspector Asmat Ali and two constables were injured during the violent clash. Constable Shahidul Islam had to be admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. The attackers managed to free Jahangir Alam from police custody during the chaos. The injured officers received primary treatment for their wounds.
However, the police launched a follow-up operation on Thursday morning to catch the convict. Jahangir Alam was re-arrested from a border area around 11:30 AM. Inspector Shahidul Islam confirmed that the mob was created using pre-planned fake rumors. The police are now identifying others involved in the assault.
Legal actions are being taken against those who participated in the mob attack. The authorities emphasized that spreading rumors to incite violence is a serious crime. Residents are urged not to react to unverified announcements from public speakers. Further investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
