  • Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated a new 500-bed building at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka. The expansion has increased the hospital’s total capacity to 1,000 beds.

The 15-storey building was inaugurated at around 10am on Saturday, August 15. After the ceremony, the prime minister planted a sapling on the hospital premises, joined a munajat, and formally opened the facility by releasing balloons and pigeons.

The expansion will significantly increase treatment capacity at the Neurosciences Hospital. The new facility includes wards, operating theatres and diagnostic units, along with 40 ICU beds, 24 post-operative beds and 112 cabins.

The National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital began providing treatment in 2012 with 300 beds in a 10-storey building. Another 200 beds were later added as patient demand increased. The latest 500-bed expansion has now brought the total capacity to 1,000 beds.

Officials say the expanded facility has strengthened the country’s specialised neurological treatment capacity and made the Neurosciences Hospital one of the largest specialised neuroscience hospitals in South Asia by bed capacity.
