বাংলাMore than 100 people are trapped inside a hydropower project tunnel in Nepal after devastating floods and landslides triggered by a glacier collapse. Three days after the disaster, Nepalese soldiers and rescue workers have begun digging with heavy equipment to reach those trapped. The Nepal tunnel rescue operation has been intensified on Saturday.
Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office said continuous efforts were underway to rescue people trapped inside the Trishuli 3A hydropower project tunnel in Rasuwa district. Authorities also intensified efforts to clear the tunnel entrance from Saturday morning.
According to Nepal’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, sudden powerful river flows on Wednesday left 933 workers at various hydropower projects missing. Some of them are believed to be among those trapped inside tunnels. The authority said the army had already rescued 350 people despite extremely difficult conditions. The Nepal tunnel rescue operation is continuing at several locations.
International assistance has also joined the rescue effort. China has sent five tunnel-rescue specialists from Tibet, while an 11-member Indian expert team has begun operations. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said another Chinese team was expected to arrive soon. Nepal has also requested advanced technology to locate trapped people and drones capable of handling heavy equipment. Nepal tunnel rescue operation teams are working under highly challenging conditions.
The Nepal Army said rescuers are using excavation machines and other specialized equipment to identify the outer section of the tunnel. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the disaster was caused by a glacier collapse near the China-Nepal border, sending huge amounts of debris downstream. At least 633 deaths have been confirmed, while around 3,000 people remain missing.
The Nepal tunnel rescue operation remains focused on locating trapped people and bringing them out safely despite difficult weather and terrain.
