  • Myanmar’s military-led government has announced a mass amnesty for thousands of prisoners, including a reduction in Suu Kyi sentence reduction.

State media reported that President Min Aung Hlaing approved pardons for 4,335 prisoners, including former President Win Myint under certain conditions.

According to reports, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s 27-year sentence has been reduced by about four and a half years. However, it remains unclear whether the Suu Kyi sentence reduction will allow her to move to house arrest.

The amnesty also includes commuting death sentences to life imprisonment and reducing life terms to 40 years.

Analysts suggest that the Suu Kyi sentence reduction could be part of a broader political strategy amid ongoing international pressure on Myanmar.
