বাংলাA Bangladesh court has formally started the trial against Matiur Rahman after framing charges in a corruption case involving alleged illicit wealth.
The Special Judge’s Court in Dhaka framed charges on Monday and fixed September 14 for recording witness testimony. Matiur Rahman pleaded not guilty and sought justice before the court.
The court also rejected his bail petition. According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Matiur Rahman concealed assets worth over Tk 12.4 million and accumulated illegal wealth of more than Tk 54 million.
The former NBR official came under public scrutiny in 2024 following the widely discussed “goat scandal,” after reports emerged about an expensive sacrificial goat purchase linked to his family. Subsequent investigations uncovered extensive assets owned by Matiur Rahman and his relatives.
The ACC found land, apartments, resorts, industrial establishments, bank accounts, and investment accounts linked to the family. The corruption trial against Matiur Rahman will now proceed with witness testimony.
