বাংলাAt least 12 people have been killed and dozens injured in clashes in Ethiopia’s western Gambela region near the border with South Sudan, according to international medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
MSF said its doctors and staff have been treating people injured after violence in Itang Special Woreda on September 18 at the Kule health center in Gambela. A total of 88 patients were treated following the violence.
According to the organization, eight patients died before reaching the health center, while another four died after arriving at the facility. The Ethiopia Gambela conflict has therefore left at least 12 people dead.
Gul Badshah, MSF’s Ethiopia operations manager, called on everyone involved in the violence to exercise restraint. He also urged all sides to protect civilians from further violence. However, it remains unclear who was responsible for the Ethiopia Gambela conflict.
Gambela has frequently experienced intercommunal violence. More than 400,000 refugees live in the region, most of them citizens of neighboring South Sudan who fled ongoing violence in their home country.
A 2025 report by the Rift Valley Institute identified competition over economic resources and the arrival of refugees as among the factors contributing to increased conflict in Gambela. Ethiopia’s two most populous regions, Oromia and Amhara, have also experienced armed conflict for years. The latest Ethiopia Gambela conflict has renewed concerns over civilian safety in the region.
The violence and its casualties highlight the continuing security challenges faced by communities and displaced populations in western Ethiopia. The Ethiopia Gambela conflict also underscores the humanitarian pressure on local health facilities responding to people injured in violence.
