The trouble began in the 58th minute when Go Ahead Eagles forward Victor Edvardsen scored his team’s third goal to make it 3-0. Supporters in Utrecht’s ‘Bunnikside’ stand then began throwing fireworks onto the pitch, prompting referee Martin van den Kerkhof to immediately suspend the game.
After a suspension of more than 20 minutes, the teams returned to the field when the situation appeared to have calmed. Utrecht soon pulled a goal back to make it 3-1, but the disturbance continued as bottles and other hard objects were thrown from the stands.
Several fireworks exploded close to the goalpost of Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Kjetil Haug. Following an extended discussion with organizers over the security situation, the referee decided to abandon the Dutch league match.
About 25 minutes remained when the game was stopped, with Go Ahead Eagles leading 3-1. Utrecht could now face significant disciplinary action over the conduct of its supporters. The incident has also raised fresh concerns over safety at the Dutch league match venue.
