  • Power strips are commonly used at home for TVs, phone chargers, routers and lamps. However, not every electrical appliance should be connected to one. High-power devices can overload a power strip, causing excessive heat, circuit trips and potentially a fire hazard.

    Experts advise avoiding devices you should not plug into a power strip, particularly appliances that consume large amounts of electricity. Refrigerators, microwaves, space heaters and air conditioners are generally safer when connected directly to an appropriate wall outlet.

    Space heaters and air conditioners are also devices you should not plug into a power strip. Because they can consume significant amounts of electricity, a power strip may become excessively hot and potentially melt or create a fire hazard.

    Hair dryers and straighteners may look small, but they can use considerable power and generate substantial heat in a short period. They are therefore among the appliances better connected directly to a suitable wall outlet. Extra care is also needed when using electrical appliances in bathrooms.

    Toasters, coffee makers and some kitchen appliances also require caution. Heating elements and motors can draw significant amounts of electricity, and excessive load may cause wiring or insulation to overheat.

    Medical electrical equipment such as CPAP machines and oxygen concentrators requires particular care. These devices may depend on a stable and continuous power supply, so users should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use an appropriate outlet or reliable power-protection system.

    High-performance gaming computers and expensive audio systems can also be affected by voltage fluctuations. A quality surge protector may be more appropriate than a basic power strip for protecting sensitive electronics.

    Connecting one power strip to another, known as daisy-chaining, is also unsafe. It can increase the electrical load on a circuit and raise the risk of overheating and electrical accidents.

    In general, appliances that produce heat, contain motors or require high power should not be connected to a basic power strip. Low-power electronics such as phone chargers and table lamps can generally be used, provided the total load remains within the power strip’s rated capacity.

    Knowing which devices you should not plug into a power strip can help reduce electrical risks at home. Always check the power requirements of appliances and the maximum rated capacity of the power strip before connecting them.
