A Rajshahi University student was bitten on the leg by a venomous krait snake while sleeping in his room at Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall. The incident occurred at around 4:30 am on Sunday (September 27) in room 138 of the hall.
The student, Nur Nabi Islam, is a 2022-23 academic session student of the Department of Information Science and Library Management at Rajshahi University.
According to reports, the snake climbed onto Nur Nabi’s bed while he was sleeping and bit him on the leg. He realized what had happened immediately. He was initially taken to the Rajshahi University Medical Center and later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). He is currently under medical observation and has been given antivenom.
Speaking about the snake bite at Rajshahi University dorm, Nur Nabi’s roommate Habibur Rahman said Nur Nabi woke up and screamed immediately after being bitten. The roommates then saw the krait snake inside the room, creating panic among them. He was subsequently taken to the university medical center and then to RMCH.
Habibur Rahman also said snakes had entered different rooms of the hall before. He alleged that the hall council and administration had previously been informed and requested to take necessary measures, but effective action had not been taken.
Professor Dr. Md. Al-Amin Sarker, provost of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, said snakes had entered the hall previously. Following those incidents, grass around the hall was cleared, snake-prevention measures were taken and bleaching powder was placed on both sides of the front area. However, the discovery of a snake on the fifth floor has caused concern. He said it was not yet possible to determine exactly how the snake entered the room.
The provost added that greater caution was needed and that additional measures would now be taken to prevent snake bites at Rajshahi University dormitories.
University Student Adviser Professor Dr. A H M Khursheed Alam said the student is currently in stable condition. He has already received antivenom, and an ICU has been kept ready. The student adviser said he had spoken with the hall provost and the chairperson of the relevant department, who were also going to the hospital.
Professor Khursheed Alam added that he was continuously monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with the hospital authorities.
The snake bite at Rajshahi University dorm has raised fresh concerns among students. The hall authorities said additional preventive measures would be taken to address the issue.
