Roberto Mancini’s second spell as national team coach therefore began with a defeat. But one result alone cannot explain the challenges facing Italian football, which has deeper structural issues.
One major concern is the limited playing time available to young Italian players. According to a FIGC report, Italy’s Serie A ranks near the bottom among monitored leagues for minutes played by eligible Under-21 players, at just 1.9%. The same report says players ineligible for the Italian national team accounted for 67.9% of Serie A minutes in the relevant season. These figures highlight the limited first-team exposure available to some young Italian players.
However, the issue cannot be explained simply by the number of foreign players. Youth academies, development systems, club investment and pathways into senior football are also important factors. The FIGC report points to gaps in youth development and the production of home-grown talent compared with several major European football nations.
Italy’s recent international record has added to the concerns. The national team failed to qualify for both the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. Although Italy won Euro 2020, they have struggled to maintain the same level of consistency in subsequent major competitions. The 2-0 defeat to Belgium has now provided another difficult starting point for the latest rebuilding process.
Italy still has important players, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the national side has not consistently produced a generation combining several established world-class stars. At the same time, the development of young talent remains an important part of the discussion surrounding Italian football.
There have also been changes away from the pitch. In July 2026, Paolo Maldini and Leonardo left their FIGC roles after the proposed appointment of Andrea Pirlo as head coach collapsed. Their tenures lasted only 16 days. Roberto Mancini was subsequently appointed head coach, while Claudio Ranieri took over as technical director. The rapid changes have raised questions about continuity in the federation’s long-term sporting project.
Ultimately, the challenges facing Italian football cannot be attributed to one coach or one match. Opportunities for young players, club development, infrastructure, long-term planning and continuity in national-team management are all part of the broader picture.
