  • The Rangpur Divisional Tank-lory Workers’ Union has launched an indefinite strike, effectively halting the fuel supply in North Bengal. The protest began on Sunday (March 29) at 8:00 AM from the Parbatipur Railhead Oil Depot. The strike was called to protest the sentencing and fining of three workers, including a driver, by a mobile court. The Dinajpur District Petrol Pump Owners’ Association has expressed solidarity with the movement, worsening the fuel crisis across the eight districts of the division.

    Reason Behind the Sudden Strike

The conflict started on Saturday night when a tank-lory carrying fuel from Parbatipur to Nilphamari encountered a mechanical fault near the Nilphamari rail gate area. While the driver, Krishna, and his assistant, Rifat, were attempting repairs, a mobile court intervened. The court alleged that the fuel in the cabin was illegal and sentenced Ekramul Haque, driver Sri Krishnachandra, and assistant Rifat to six months in prison along with a total fine of one lakh taka. This legal action triggered the fuel supply in North Bengal to come to a standstill as workers demanded their immediate release.

    Worker Leaders Demand Immediate Release

Worker leaders have condemned the harassment on highways and the “unjust” sentencing of their colleagues. Ataur Rahman, President of the Rangpur Divisional Tank-lory Workers’ Union, stated that the program would continue until the workers are released and the concerned official is removed. Joint General Secretary Manjurul Islam warned that if their demands are not met within 48 hours, the strike would be intensified. The protest highlights the growing tension between transport workers and mobile court operations regarding fuel transportation regulations.
