  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has detained a Pakistani cargo ship named ‘Selen’ in the Hormuz Strait. This incident occurred on Tuesday while the vessel was traveling from Sharjah to Karachi. Despite Pakistan being a designated mediator between the US and Iran, Tehran enforced strict maritime protocols. The IRGC claimed the ship failed to obtain the necessary permission from Iranian maritime authorities.

Strict Protocols in the Hormuz Strait Blockade

The IRGC released the captain and crew after initial questioning but did not allow the ship to pass through the strait. The Hormuz Strait blockade has been in effect since February 28, following the conflict with the US and Israel. Iran mandates that every vessel must secure official clearance before entering this strategic waterway. Consequently, the Pakistani ship was forced to retreat and find an alternative route.

Impact on Global Energy Markets and Diplomacy

The Hormuz Strait blockade continues to disrupt nearly one-fifth of the world’s total oil supply. This pressure has led President Donald Trump to seek a ceasefire through Pakistan’s mediation. While Islamabad is actively negotiating with Tehran, this recent ship detention shows Iran’s uncompromising stance. Global oil prices are rising as energy supplies face significant hurdles due to this ongoing regional blockade.
