  • France has brought its worst France wildfire since 1949 under control after more than a week of intense firefighting near Bordeaux in the Gironde region.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the fire is no longer spreading, although firefighters are still extinguishing small remaining hotspots.

The massive France wildfire burned around 42,000 hectares of pine forest and destroyed at least 240 homes. More than 200,000 people were evacuated, with many now returning to their homes.

Scientists say prolonged heatwaves and human-driven climate change have significantly increased the risk of extreme wildfires, contributing to the scale of the France wildfire.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System, about 92,000 hectares have burned across France this year, marking the country’s highest wildfire damage in two decades and highlighting the severity of the ongoing France wildfire season.
