National Krishak Shakti has held a human chain demanding an investigation into allegations of irregularities, corruption and misuse of funds in various projects of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), along with public disclosure of the investigation report.
The programme was held at 4pm on Wednesday (September 30) in front of the BLRI main gate. Speakers called for a fair and impartial investigation into the BLRI irregularity allegations raised in connection with different projects and administrative activities.
Alam Hasan, organizer of National Krishak Shakti, Julkar Nain, joint convener of NCP Dhaka District North, and Mahiyuddin Shuvo, convener of National Youth Shakti Dhaka District North, addressed the programme, moderated by Mehedi Hasan Munna.
National Krishak Shakti Member Secretary agriculturist Golam Mortuza Selim said the allegations involving various BLRI projects and administrative activities should be investigated. He referred to reports of 13 research roosters being stolen in 2025 and an earlier allegation involving 38 roosters from the same shed in 2023.
Speakers also demanded investigations into various allegations concerning recruitment, projects and administrative activities involving former BLRI Director General Dr. S M Jahangir Hossain and former Director (Research) Dr. Nasrin Sultana. They also called for an examination of the circumstances surrounding Nasrin Sultana’s temporary suspension and subsequent reinstatement.
The protesters sought disclosure of application, allocation and distribution records related to special hatching eggs produced by BLRI. They alleged that although the eggs were supposed to be distributed according to the sequence of online applications, there were allegations of repeated allocations to preferred individuals.
The BLRI irregularity allegations also cover project fund management, livestock health research projects, the GHSA project, development projects and purchases made under the revenue budget. Speakers called for verification of accounts and inventories for chemicals, equipment and laboratory materials purchased through these projects.
They also demanded scrutiny of the Black Bengal goat breed improvement research project and the ostrich project, including allocations, expenditure, animal imports, deaths, current numbers and related official records. Speakers said discrepancies in reported ostrich numbers should be examined against government registers, purchase documents, veterinary records, post-mortem records and inventories.
The human chain also called for publication of complete information on allocations, expenditure and achievements of major ongoing and completed BLRI projects, the number and financial value of audit objections, the current locations of vehicles and equipment purchased under projects, and records concerning animals that died or went missing during project implementation.
Golam Mortuza Selim said the government-formed investigation committee should complete its investigation within 15 days and make the report public. He also called for legal action if the allegations are established through the investigation.
He warned that National Krishak Shakti would announce a larger protest programme if effective action was not taken within 15 days.
The BLRI irregularity allegations raised at the programme remain allegations pending verification. Investigation findings, official records and responses from the relevant authorities would be necessary to establish the facts surrounding the claims.
