The FBI has issued an urgent warning regarding a massive malware campaign targeting older Wi-Fi routers. Cybercriminals are infecting these devices with the AVrecon malware to build a global proxy network. Over 369,000 routers have already been compromised, according to recent security reports. This breach allows hackers to use your IP address for illegal activities without your knowledge.
How Hackers Exploit Vulnerable Router Models
Infected routers are often sold to a residential proxy service called SocksEscort. Criminals then use these connections for ad fraud, bank theft, and password spraying attacks. The FBI warning highlights that many people unknowingly provide a gateway for these crimes. Using an compromised router can lead to severe privacy leaks and digital identity theft.
List of High-Risk Router Models and Brands
Several popular brands have been identified in the vulnerable list due to a lack of security updates. Models from TP-Link, D-Link, Netgear, and Zyxel are specifically mentioned as high-risk targets. If your device is on this list, it is highly recommended to replace it immediately. Always ensure your firmware is updated to the latest version to prevent unauthorized access.
