The move comes after remarks from former US President Donald Trump, who suggested that although Iran could participate in the World Cup, playing in the United States might not be safe for them.
Reacting to this statement, Taj made it clear via Iran’s embassy in Mexico that if the host country cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, they will not travel to the US. Instead, Iran is pushing for its matches to be held in Mexico, one of the co-host nations of the tournament.
Uncertainty Over Iran’s Participation in 2026 World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Iran’s group stage fixtures are currently planned in Los Angeles and Seattle in the US, which has intensified concerns amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Recent developments, including US airstrikes involving Israel and escalating regional instability, have further complicated Iran’s participation. Iran’s sports minister has already hinted that playing in the US under such circumstances may be nearly impossible. While FIFA has yet to comment officially, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) remains optimistic that Iran will participate in the tournament.
