বাংলাCalifornia has officially added Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to the state’s list of holidays. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2017 (AB 2017) on September 27, 2026. The governor’s official legislative update lists the measure as “State holidays: Eid.”
Under the new law, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are included in California’s state holiday framework. However, the designation does not mean that every government office, business, or court in the state must close on the two days. The legislation specifically excludes the two Eid observances from being designated as judicial holidays.
The law authorizes public schools and community colleges to close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha through the applicable local processes. It also provides eligible state employees with options related to holiday credit or leave under existing rules.
AB 2017 places Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha within California’s statutory list of state holidays. The legislation identifies Eid al-Fitr as the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar and Eid al-Adha as the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
The change gives formal recognition in California law to two major Islamic religious observances. It also creates provisions that can affect school closures and leave arrangements for eligible state employees on the dates of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and is closely associated with the Hajj pilgrimage.
The Governor of California confirmed the signing of AB 2017 in the September 27 legislative update. The bill is titled “State holidays: Eid,” adding Eid state holidays to California’s existing statutory holiday framework.
