  • Online hate targeting South Asians in the United States has increased sharply, according to a new report by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH). The report found that the monthly volume of anti-South Asian hate posts on X rose by 240 percent between January 2024 and June 2026.

The researchers recorded 12,904 posts in January 2024 compared with 43,843 in June 2026. Between January 2025 and June 2026 alone, they identified approximately 542,360 hateful posts targeting South Asians on X.

Using the United Nations definition of hate speech, researchers reviewed posts and excluded criticism that did not meet their hate-speech criteria. A major portion of anti-South Asian online hate portrayed Indians, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis as threats, job stealers or a demographic danger to the United States.

The report links several periods of increased hostility with political disputes surrounding the H-1B visa program, immigration policy, economic uncertainty and the growing visibility of South Asians in American public life. These are presented as associated factors rather than proof of a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

The report also documented growing narratives portraying South Asians as dirty or unhygienic. The monthly volume of such posts increased by 171 percent between January 2025 and June 2026. Researchers also found that different South Asian nationalities and religious communities were frequently portrayed as a single group.

Social media and generative AI were also highlighted in the report. Researchers said digital platforms can facilitate targeted harassment and the rapid production of demeaning content, potentially allowing anti-South Asian online hate narratives to spread more widely.

The researchers further argued that online hostility can intersect with offline hostility. However, the report’s main figures measure identified hateful posts online and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of the views of the entire US population.
