বাংলাTanvir Saikat, a student of the Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering (EECE) Department of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST), has secured a fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.
Tanvir, from the 2017-18 academic session, has received full funding through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA). The award will support his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies and research at the University of Sheffield.
The University of Sheffield is a founding member of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group and is also recognized as a traditional red-brick university. According to Tanvir, the university ranks 82nd globally in the QS World University Rankings and 33rd in the QS Sustainability Rankings.
At Sheffield, Tanvir Saikat will conduct research at the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. His research topic is ‘perovskite materials for sustainable solar-energy conversion’. His work will explore the potential of perovskite-based materials for making solar energy conversion more efficient and sustainable.
Before securing the Sheffield opportunity, Tanvir also received a PhD offer from the University of Southampton in the UK. Southampton is also a founding member of the Russell Group.
In addition, Tanvir Saikat previously received a fully funded scholarship for the FAMEAIS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme. The Erasmus Mundus programme, involving higher education institutions across Europe, further strengthened his international academic experience.
Tanvir also received recognition from several renowned universities in the United States. Although he initially did not plan to apply to US universities, he eventually decided to do so after encouragement from friends and well-wishers.
He focused on programmes that offered complete application fee waivers. As a result, he later received partial scholarship offers for master’s programmes from several US universities, including Johns Hopkins University, Brown University, Boston University, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Florida and Tulane University. Brown University is a member of the Ivy League.
Tanvir’s achievement comes after a long period of preparation, waiting and uncertainty. The higher education application process brought both expectations and anxiety, with long waits and moments of doubt along the way.
Reflecting on his experience, Tanvir said people can sometimes become so attached to a particular destination that they forget other possible paths may also exist. In his case, different opportunities eventually opened a new path forward.
Starting his academic journey at PUST and now moving to the University of Sheffield with full PhD funding, Tanvir Saikat represents an example for Bangladeshi students aspiring to pursue international research opportunities in engineering and science.
His upcoming research on solar energy and sustainable energy technologies could contribute to the broader field of clean-energy research. His journey also marks another step by a young Bangladeshi researcher into the international academic community.
