বাংলাBangladesh is set to win an individual medal at the Asian Games after a 40-year wait, with 23-year-old Jinnat securing a bronze in the women’s 52kg wushu event.
Jinnat lost her semifinal bout to China’s Wu Die, ending her hopes of reaching the gold or silver medal contest. However, reaching the semifinal had already guaranteed her a bronze medal.
The achievement ends Bangladesh’s long wait for an individual Asian Games medal. Before Jinnat, boxer Mosharraf Hossain was the last Bangladeshi athlete to win an individual medal at the Asian Games.
Mosharraf won bronze in the individual light-heavyweight category at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. No Bangladeshi athlete had won a medal in an individual event at the Asian Games in the following four decades.
Jinnat has now ended that wait at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Her Jinnat bronze medal will add a new chapter to Bangladesh’s Asian Games and wushu history.
The 23-year-old wushu athlete’s achievement also brings Bangladesh another individual medal at the continental multi-sport event after a four-decade gap.
