বাংলাThe Bangladesh government plans to increase the country’s oil reserves from the current one and a half months of demand to six months, Planning Minister Jonaid Abdur Rahim Saki has said.
Speaking to reporters after an ECNEC meeting at the Planning Ministry in Agargaon on Wednesday, August 19, Saki said the country currently has oil reserves sufficient for around one and a half months. The government plans to raise that figure to three months soon and eventually to six months as part of a long-term strategy.
The minister said the government is also focusing on gas production and renewable power to strengthen energy security. A gas supply problem caused by a boiler or technical issue at the floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali has now been resolved, he said.
According to Saki, Bangladesh does not currently have enough gas and electricity to meet demand. The government is working to address the temporary electricity shortage and importing gas to meet immediate needs.
He added that importing gas alone will not be enough, as additional LNG stations will also be required. Setting up the necessary infrastructure will take time.
The government’s plan to expand oil reserves, along with measures to improve gas supply and renewable power generation, is aimed at strengthening the country’s long-term energy security.
Increasing oil reserves to six months is being considered a major part of the government’s broader energy security strategy.
