  • 🌊 Prime Minister to Launch Nationwide Canal Excavation Program Today

✍️ Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to launch a major nationwide canal excavation and re-excavation program aimed at protecting rivers, canals and water reservoirs across Bangladesh.

    ## 20,000 km Canal Excavation Plan

As part of the government’s five-year plan to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals, the prime minister will visit Dinajpur to inaugurate the initiative.

According to a letter sent by the Planning-3 Division of the Ministry of Water Resources, the formal inauguration will take place on Monday (March 16) in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur.

In the first phase, excavation work will begin simultaneously in 54 districts across the country. At around 10:30 am, the prime minister will symbolically start the program by cutting soil at the historic Balrampur-Sahapara canal in Kaharol upazila.

At the same time, ministers, advisers, the chief whip of parliament and members of parliament will inaugurate the program in their respective districts.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister will also participate in a tree plantation program along the canal bank.

The Sahapara canal carries historical significance. In 1977, then president Ziaur Rahman personally participated in excavating the 12.2-kilometer canal alongside local residents and party activists using traditional tools.

After many years, the canal is being re-excavated, and officials hope that nearly 350,000 people in the area will directly benefit from the project.

Social Welfare Minister AZM Zahid Hossain has been supervising the preparations for the event on site. He said there is widespread enthusiasm in Kaharol surrounding the prime minister’s visit and the canal excavation initiative.

Dinajpur-6 MP Zahid Hossain also said that the excavation project will bring significant improvements to agriculture and irrigation systems. Increased use of surface water will reduce pressure on groundwater and help address drought, flooding and waterlogging while creating rural employment opportunities.
