The Bangladesh government has increased passenger fares on inland waterways following a rise in fuel prices. The Ministry of Shipping issued a notification on Tuesday (September 29), announcing the revised waterway fares for passenger transport. The new rates are effective from September 24, 2026.
According to the notification, the revised waterway fares were set under Rule 27 of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport (Routes, Permits, Timetables and Fare Fixation) Rules, 2019. The changes apply to the maximum and minimum passenger fares charged on inland vessels.
For the first 100 kilometers, the passenger fare per kilometer has increased by 22 poisha, from Tk 2.95 to Tk 3.17. For distances beyond the first 100 kilometers, the fare has risen by 19 poisha per kilometer, from Tk 2.52 to Tk 2.71.
The minimum passenger fare on waterways has also been increased from Tk 32 to Tk 35. As a result, passengers traveling by inland waterways will pay higher waterway fares depending on the distance of their journey.
The notification also requires the revised waterway fares to be displayed prominently at all river-port terminals and in visible locations on vessels. Previous notifications and orders related to vessel fare determination have also been repealed.
The government has made the revised waterway fares effective from September 24, 2026. The move comes after the recent increase in domestic fuel prices.
