Ireland defeated Israel 3-0 in the UEFA Nations League in Debrecen, Hungary, in a match that also drew attention because of political tensions surrounding the fixture.
During Israel’s national anthem before kickoff, the Irish players stood with their heads bowed. The two teams also did not take part in the customary pre-match handshakes. Irish players wore black armbands during the match. The Ireland-Israel match had already attracted significant attention before kickoff because of these symbolic gestures.
Ireland made a fast start on the pitch. Troy Parrott opened the scoring in the 13th minute, with Adam Idah doubling the lead three minutes later. Jack Moylan added a third goal in the 25th minute to give Ireland a 3-0 lead before halftime.
After scoring the third goal, Moylan removed his black armband, kissed it and then kissed the badge on his shirt. The Football Association of Ireland had said the armbands were being worn in recognition of people who had lost their lives in the conflict.
The decision to play the fixture had also been discussed within the Irish camp. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the match because of his personal position. Following discussions involving the players, coaching staff and the FAI, the team voted to proceed with the fixture.
Irish manager Heimir Hallgrimsson also faced criticism from the Israel Football Association over comments he made before the match. Irish football officials and some political figures subsequently expressed support for the manager.
The victory gave Ireland three points from two matches in Nations League Group B3. Austria lead the group after beating Kosovo 3-1. Ireland and Israel are scheduled to meet again on October 4 in Backa Topola, Serbia.
