  • The renewed closure of the Hormuz Strait has triggered fresh uncertainty in global trade and energy supply chains. According to recent vessel tracking data, at least 10 ships were forced to turn back mid-journey due to the Hormuz Strait closure, with several of them originally heading toward Indian ports.

On April 18, maritime tracking analysis revealed that these vessels attempted to cross the strait but reversed course due to escalating security risks. Reports indicate that oil tankers were the most affected, as the Hormuz Strait closure disrupted key energy transport routes.

Data from MarineTraffic shows that the ships changed direction near Iran’s Larak Island, an area closely monitored by Iranian authorities. Given heightened tensions and control in the region, the Hormuz Strait closure forced operators to prioritize safety over transit.

Earlier, Iran had stated that the strait would remain open for commercial shipping during a temporary ceasefire with the United States. However, citing continued U.S. naval restrictions, Tehran reversed its stance and reinstated the Hormuz Strait closure, further escalating the situation.

The strait is responsible for transporting nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply. As a result, the Hormuz Strait closure could significantly impact global energy markets, increasing volatility and putting pressure on energy-dependent economies.
