Launching ‘Farmers’ Market’ in Sylhet: A Step Toward Direct Connection

On Saturday morning (April 11, 2026), while inaugurating the first-ever government-managed “Farmers’ Market” at Tilagarh point in Sylhet, the Minister addressed the Market Control and Syndicates issue. He remarked, “We will erase the very idea that the market is controlled by syndicates in Bangladesh.” To achieve this, the government is modernizing the supply chain through a digital model from import to retail, making it easier to detect any manipulation quickly. This market will allow marginal farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers without intermediaries.

Currently, agricultural products change hands four to five times before reaching the consumer, driving up prices unfairly. The Market Control and Syndicates issue is being tackled by reducing these middle layers. The Minister noted that this setup creates a ‘win-win’ situation for both farmers and consumers. Similar markets will be established across all districts under the supervision of local administrations to ensure a fair price and prevent any form of extortion or extra costs.

    PM’s Visit and Agricultural Development

Highlighting agricultural progress, the Minister announced that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Sylhet on May 2 to inaugurate the re-excavation of the Bashia Canal. These initiatives aim to boost agricultural production and stabilize the national market. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Rezaun Nabi and Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, among other political and business leaders. The minister emphasized that tackling Market Control and Syndicates remains a top priority for the new administration.
