Law Minister Asaduzzaman Presents Bill to Ensure Justice for Disappeared Victims

In a historic move for the country’s judiciary, the Enforced Disappearance Bill was passed in the National Parliament on Tuesday (April 7). Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman introduced the bill, which was passed by voice vote under the chairmanship of Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram. This amendment formally includes “enforced disappearance” in the list of crimes against humanity, clearing the legal path for trials at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

During the session, the Law Minister addressed critics of the government’s intent, stating that the Enforced Disappearance Bill reflects the administration’s unwavering commitment to justice. “By defining disappearance as a crime against humanity, we are bringing these trials into the correct legal framework. This bill informs the nation of how determined this government is to hold perpetrators accountable,” the Minister added. He urged those questioning the government’s goodwill to study the new legal provisions thoroughly.

Speaker Hafiz Advises Focus on Parliamentary Discussion

The passage of the Enforced Disappearance Bill saw a brief reaction from the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, who noted that the opposition would participate in detailed discussions at the appropriate time. Following the debate, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad advised the Law Minister to focus strictly on parliamentary proceedings and member statements rather than external criticism.
