New Administration Prioritizes Essential Projects in Landmark First ECNEC Meeting

In a significant step toward accelerating national development, the First ECNEC Meeting of the newly formed government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to be held today, Monday (April 6). The meeting, presided over by PM Tarique Rahman, will commence at 10:30 AM at the Cabinet Room of the Bangladesh Secretariat. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that an ECNEC meeting is being conducted under a BNP-led administration, the last one being in 2006.

During this First ECNEC Meeting, a total of 19 development projects have been prepared for approval by the Planning Commission. Out of these, 17 projects are already listed, while two additional projects will be presented directly. The estimated cost for these initiatives is approximately 15,000 crore BDT. In a strategic shift to save energy, the venue has been moved from the traditional NEC Conference Room in Agargaon to the Secretariat, signaling the government’s commitment to efficiency and resource management.

Focus on Rapid Completion and Infrastructure Development

The First ECNEC Meeting agenda highlights a policy shift toward completing ongoing essential works rather than initiating luxury or less critical projects. Key projects up for approval include the Karatoya River System Development, the construction of a 21-story office building at the Secretariat, and various IT training and incubation centers. Health and family welfare also take center stage, with plans for diagnostic centers in eight divisional cities and a new Dental College and Hospital in Gopalganj.

Additionally, the First ECNEC Meeting will address vital transportation infrastructure, such as the second phase of the Border Road (Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban) and the construction of climate-resilient bridges in the Mymensingh division. A total of 33 projects already approved by the Planning Minister will also be presented for notification.
