Education Minister Dr. Milan – শিক্ষামন্ত্রী ড. মিলন – New Office Timings and Energy Saving Measures 2026
Government Implements New 9 AM to 4 PM Office Schedule Starting Sunday
In a strategic move to address the ongoing national energy crisis, the government has officially reduced working hours for all public and private offices effective today, Sunday (April 5). According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, all offices will now operate from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. Fridays and Saturdays remain weekly holidays. This decision follows a cabinet meeting held last Thursday, reducing the standard workday by one hour to a total of seven hours per day.
The energy-saving initiative extends beyond office hours. The government has mandated that all shopping malls and markets must close by 6:00 PM. Additionally, specific instructions have been issued to avoid decorative lighting at social events like weddings. Emergency services, however, remain exempt from these new timing restrictions. The Supreme Court is expected to provide separate guidelines regarding judicial hours, while the Ministry of Labour will handle regulations for private industrial sectors.
Banking Sector Adjustments and Transaction Hours
Following the government’s lead, Bangladesh Bank has also revised its operational timings. According to the central bank’s circular, banking activities will now run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, public transaction hours are limited to 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Despite these changes, bank branches located in port areas, including land, sea, and airports, will continue their 24/7 operations to ensure uninterrupted trade and customs clearance.
These collective measures are designed to minimize electricity consumption across the nation. By shortening the operational window of high-consumption sectors like banks and shopping centers, the government aims to stabilize the power grid. Citizens are encouraged to adapt to these new schedules to support national resource management during this challenging period.
