Zonayed Saki, the State Minister for Planning, has officially resigned from his position as the Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan. He announced this decision during a press conference at the party’s central office in Hatirpool on Saturday. Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu has been appointed as the Acting Chief Coordinator of the party.
During the press meet, Zonayed Saki explained that he stepped down to separate political party leadership from government responsibilities. He emphasized that maintaining a distinction between the party and the administration is crucial for transparency. Saki was re-elected as the Chief Coordinator during the party’s 5th national convention in November last year.
Political Career and New Role in the Government
Zonayed Saki was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Brahmanbaria-6 constituency in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. He contested as an ally of the BNP-led coalition, using the ‘Mathal’ symbol. Initially, he was appointed as the State Minister for Finance and Planning in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s cabinet.
Following a cabinet reshuffle, he was assigned solely as the State Minister for Planning. His resignation from the party post highlights his commitment to his ministerial duties. He stated that the government must focus on implementing national mandates while the party continues its independent political activities.
Zonayed Saki on July Sanad Implementation
Addressing the ongoing debate over the ‘July Sanad’ (July Manifesto), Saki noted that discussions regarding its implementation are still active. He mentioned that the opinions of the majority party would carry the most weight in the execution process. He urged all stakeholders to find a common ground for the sake of national stability.
The party’s 55-member executive committee will now work under the leadership of acting coordinator Nilu. Ganosamhati Andolan remains a significant voice in the current political landscape. Saki’s move is seen by many as a step toward establishing a healthier political culture in Bangladesh.
